Technology pushing aviation forward

February 29, 2012, 12:54 pm

AAR Aircraft Component Services in Garden City, New York, recently launched a new partnership with local school districts to provide science and technology internships to high school students. The company, which repairs military and commercial aircraft parts, will be working with schools and the Cradle of Aviation Museum to launch the internships, providing students with hands-on experience in the aviation industry.

ACS will be the first of 30 aviation and technology companies working with the school district on the new internship program. The internships were organized by the Cradle Aviation museum, and will available to students excelling in science, technology, engineering and math classes at the museum, Newsday reported.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York, who has been an active proponent of educational internships for a long time, announced the new internship program. Gillibrand believes preparing students in the fields of math and science will improve the educational system as well as increase the number of qualified students entering the workforce. Internship programs can help create new jobs in expanding fields such as aviation and engineering. Internship participants will gain valuable knowledge and experience, prepping them for higher-paying jobs in the technology industry in the future, the source reported.

Sam Gorman, ACS general manager, said the company plans to hire two to five student interns over the summer. The ongoing intern program could possibly lead to full time hires down the road, the source reported.

One of the many aspects of aviation technology interns might be exposed to is the creation and implementation of new mobile technology on board flights. For example, MyClip will be presenting one of its latest technological innovations at the 2012 Sun 'n Fun airshow at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Florida. MyClip's line of products aim to help private, military and commercial pilots use iPads and other tablets in place of paper while flying. The products help attach the mobile devices to various parts of the plane for easy access in the cockpit. Pilots will be able to organize their documents and records digitally, and easily transport them while traveling. The mobile devices reduce clutter and improve efficiency, thus making the skies safer.

Pilot insurance is another way for pilots to remain safe and protected while flying.
