Delta to close call center

May 29, 2012, 02:30 pm

A call center for Delta Airlines is scheduled to close September 1 outside the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, leaving 189 employees without a job.

Delta spokesperson Gina Laughlin said that employees were previously notified of the center closing in April but were told that another reservations and sales center was opening in Sioux City, Iowa.

Employees have the option to apply for open jobs at the other center, but those who are not interested or unable to take the other position will be given severance packages.

"We have more facility space than we need," said Laughlin. "Consolidating the domestic call center operations into our existing offices allows Delta to be more in line with our competitors and maintain our focus on reduced overhead costs."

The current price of jet fuel is $2.88 based on government figures, according to The Associated Press. Fewer airlines have improved costs of jet fuel for the airliners left but the price is only going to rise. Delta and Northwest Airlines merged in 2008 and have continued to try to cut overhead costs in order to stay up with the competition.

Those burning the jet fuel and meeting the upcoming flying season demand should consider pilot life insurance to ensure family’s financial security in case of an emergency.
