JFK Airport supports economy with terminal expansion

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JetBlue recently announced that more than 1,000 jobs are expected to be created with an upcoming expansion of a terminal at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The new terminal will be called T5i and will add 145,000 square feet on three levels to the 635,000-square-foot Terminal 5, which JetBlue occupies. The new terminal houses international flights, and the new federal customs station eliminates the need for customs inspections for international fliers out of Terminal 4.
The expansion project is expected to create 1,090 jobs and will bring in $325 million in economic activity during its construction, as well as $74 million in wages, according to the Port Authority. The actual price of the expansion is not set, but the project will be completed by 2014 or 2015.
Elsewhere in the Northeast, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is expanding its security checkpoints from six to nine. The project will cost $100 million, adding 8,500 square feet of new food and retail space.
Last month the airport reported a record-setting first quarter, servicing 4.9 million commercial travelers. Pilots providing this service should get informed on pilot life insurance in the unlikely event of an emergency.
