The Lafayette Regional Airport in Louisiana has received a $3.19 million federal grant in order to improve its runway safety area.
U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany said the money will be used for engineering system upgrades to improve to the airport's runway. The funding will also go toward the airport’s second arresting system, which is designed to halt aircraft in the unlikely event that they would not be able to stop before reaching the end of the runway.
"It's basically a big sand trap, and, when they lose their breaks, they go into that,” said Gregory Roberts, the airport’s director. “It's critical that it stops at a progressive method so that there are no injuries to passengers or damage to the aircraft.”
A new system was recently placed in the airport's south end and the new addition will take place on the northern end.
The Santa Fe Municipal Airport in Arizona also received a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation worth $3.2 million in order to make improvements and purchase equipment. Pilots offering flights in and out of these airports should consider pilot life insurance, in the unlikely event of a tragedy
