Proposed improvements to Texas GA airport approved

Higgins-Lipscomb airport's request for $293,450 for airport repairs has been approved by the Texas Transportation Committee, according to the Amarillo Globe-News.
The Committee will be providing the funds through its Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which is reserved for improvements to the general aviation system, which includes about 275 eligible airports statewide. Overall, the Texas Department of Transportation expects to provide around $60 million for airport infrastructure improvements and maintenance, the source said.
Some of the funds will go towards pavement upgrades and other maintenance for the airport, the source said.
The trend of states reserving grants for general aviation facilities is likely to continue through the next fiscal year, as President Barack Obama's proposed budget cuts would reduce funding for larger and mid-size airports, but maintain funding for smaller facilities, which likely cannot secure funds elsewhere.
Despite infrastructure improvements made to general aviation airports, accidents may still occur when landing or taking off. Aviators should ensure that they have pilot life insurance coverage, which will enable them to provide for their family in the event that they are involved in a fatal accident.
