2010 'disappointing' for airline safety

January 13, 2011, 03:17 pm

The number of fatal jet and turboprop plane accidents in 2010 increased by 22 percent, according to aviation statistics provider Ascend Worldwide.

In a separate statement, Ascend discussed the specific statistics relating to general aviation accidents in comparison to airliner accidents and made the determination that there are more GA accidents per year. The figures were .33 percent of total airliners were involved in accidents as compared to .439 percent of general aviation planes.

The statement hints that the higher numbers may be due to the independent nature of general aviation. "We must bear in mind that these aircraft often operate away from established airports that the airliners use. The GA fleet works hard, often doing long hours without all the support the airlines have," Ascend says.

The Wall Street Journal also cited the 2010 accident statistics released by Ascend, stating that insurance claims have exceeded premiums for the airline industry. This is likely due to the 13 percent increase in the total number of deaths resulting from plane accidents, from 731 people in 2009 to 828 people in 2010.

Though the resulting increase in insurance claims will lead to some financial difficulties for pilots, it reflects the importance of life insurance for pilots and others regularly engaged in flight.
