Aircraft experts working with California legislatures on flight training bill

In an attempt to achieve exemption for flight instructors under the California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009, experts and lawmakers are trying to get a new bill signed into law, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. The original act posed fees and reporting requirements on flight schools and instructors which many individuals feel are onerous. The AOPA and the National Air Transportation Association were able to secure a moratorium on the act last year, but that is set to expire on July 1, 2011. This new bill would allow certain Federal Aviation Administration approved instructors and schools to be exempt from certain fees, possibly freeing up more money to secure pilots life insurance policies.
"AOPA is working hard to convince lawmakers that flight training is vitally important to the health of aviation in the state," said AOPA California Regional Representative John Pfeifer, "and the health of aviation in the state is vitally important to the state economy as a whole."
Pfeifer testified in support of the bill in April and AOPA members have asked elected officials to vote in favor of the bill when the time comes.
