Weather conditions can play a large role in whether a pilot safely reaches his or her destination. Severe weather events, such as hurricanes, can pose a substantial danger to aircraft operators and their passengers.
In the wake of Hurricane Paula, Frontier Airlines is allowing passengers who have already purchased a ticket to travel to or from Cancun to make one itinerary change. Other airlines are also keeping safety in mind and may end up diverting routes as well.
The category 2 level storm has anticipated winds of excess of 100 miles per hour. The Associated Press reports that the storm has already caused havoc in Honduras where 19 homes were ruined.
Pilots should always take weather forecasts into consideration before taking flight. While it may delay one's plans, it is wise not to try to take off if a storm is being predicted.
There are a variety of tools pilots can use, ranging from the inexpensive to highly elaborate, to anticipate weather conditions they may face on their journey. However, all the tools and advice won't increase one's safety is they are not properly followed.
