AOPA speaks out against Colorado power line project

January 20, 2011, 03:55 pm

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is urging the Federal Aviation Administration to advocate for a halt in a Colorado power line project that may cause an airspace obstruction, according to the group.

The group reported that the project at Blake Field in Delta, Colorado will include the construction of structures they describe as "transmission-like", extending 52 feet above ground level in an area very close to the airport. Despite the extensive height of these structures, the company in charge of the construction began building before undergoing a complete obstruction review. The group did not notify the FAA of construction until 4 months after construction had already started.

In a formal letter, the AOPA's Heidi Williams requested that the FAA "take every available action to preclude this proponent from completing the project until a full analysis has been completed and all necessary mitigation has taken place to prevent a safety hazard for surrounding airspace users."

Structures such as those under construction in Colorado can be a hazard for aircraft maneuvering and some flight devices such as GPS. Pilots may risk becoming the victim of a crash caused by unauthorized construction, and they should look into life insurance to ensure their families are provided for in the event of an accident.
