Award winning aviation safety

The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit recently received the 2010 Admiral Flatley Memorial Award in Camp Pendleton, California. The aviation safety award recognizes an aircraft carrier and amphibious ship, as well as their embarked air wing and marine expeditionary unit for outstanding achievement in mishap prevention. The 15th MEU was honored with the award for their safety measures taken during their last deployment from July to December 2010.
Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System reported the award is based on a comprehensive assessment of aviation system and is sponsored by Boeing Aircraft Company. Winners demonstrated excellence in unit mishap history, and accounted for the number of days the ship was deployed and the number of aircraft flying hours totaled. A commander also does an assessment of the overall effectiveness of a ship's safety program.
