Babbit warns pilots not to get "too comfortable"

At the Sun 'n Fun festival, Federal Aviation Administrator Randy Babbitt spoke to an audience of pilots warning them not to get "too comfortable" as their expertise grows, according to AVweb.
Babbitt noted that, though the overly cautious beginner usually cracks a smile on the faces of veteran aviators, caution is something that should not be lost altogether and may significantly contribute to a pilot's ability to respond properly in an emergency situation.
"How often do you test yourself? How often do you ask yourself, 'What would I do right now if the engine quit? Where would I land?' Just because your first scan of the cockpit is OK, that doesn't mean you stop scanning," Babbitt told the audience. "It's all about situational awareness. It's a process that never stops."
Babbit encourages pilots to treat every flight like their lives depend on it. Such an attitude toward flying may enhance safety and emergency response techniques, Babbitt suggests.
Even for those who maintain a breadth of quality knowledge about what to do in the event of an emergency, some fatal accidents are unavoidable. Pilot life insurance is the bottom-line protection a pilot may need to care for their family, in case they perish as a result of a crash.
