Debate continues over GPS interference

After weeks of arguments and speculation, tests have confirmed that LightSquared's new high-powered wireless network does cause substantial interference to GPS navigation systems, according to General Aviation News. The company has claimed that there is a simple technological solution that will fix this problem, but many involved in the issue are not convinced.
"It's time for the FCC to stop squandering resources trying to find a solution to an unfixable problem. Instead, it should focus its efforts on finding spectrum that LightSquared can operate in - where LightSquared won't interfere with GPS," Jim Kirkland, vice president of Trimble Navigation Limited, told General Aviation News.
The Federal Communications Commission granted the company a waiver to build 40,000 stations for cell phone reception, without first determining the effects it would have on navigation systems.
GPS is used by millions of people across the country, including military personnel, search and rescue teams, and pilots. Putting this technology at risk could be potentially threatening their lives, causing pilots life insurance rates to increase.
LightSquared representatives have stood behind their project, vowing to have a technical solution to the current problem and assuring concerned citizens that the two systems can peacefully coexist.
