Destructive materials found on plane highlight importance of security

November 5, 2010, 12:24 pm

Flight safety and security have long been a concern for pilots and passengers alike. However, the importance of screening people received increased scrutiny after September 11. Years after the attack, concerns about terrorism persist.

While destruction of the same magnitude that took place in the U.S. hasn't occurred elsewhere, nations are aware that such a calamity could take place on their soil.

Recently, the UK Home Secretary Theresa May has called for increased security after explosives were found on a flight traveling from Yemen to Chicago.

Not long before the discovery, British Airways boss Martin Broughton had critical words concerning America's security measures.

"America does not do internally a lot of the things they demand that we do," said Broughton. "We shouldn't stand for that. We should say 'we'll only do things which we consider to be essential and that you Americans also consider essential.'"

A number of airports around the country have installed new security systems to help prevent passengers from boarding planes with hazardous materials. The Transportation Security Administration has been using advanced imaging technology for the past few years to help aid in the detection process.
