FAA official worries about lack of rail security

April 29, 2010, 08:00 pm

A representative with the Federal Aviation Administration is worried that too much of the nation's security focus has been turned to the air while ignoring the rail system.

According to FoxNews.com, the unnamed FAA official said he supports the efforts made to make aviation more secure, though he sees the rail system as not getting enough attention. The representative's comments came during a questions session following a speech by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Napolitano said the official was correct in pointing out that terrorists want to target the nation's rail system. She said that the Obama administration is working toward improving security on trains in the country by higher deployments of Visible Intermodal Protection and Response teams.

"VIPER teams are the rail equivalent of federalair marshals, patrolling Amtrak and other mass transit systems for suspicious behavior and responding to potential incidents," FoxNews.com said.

Air security has been a concern on a variety of fronts, regardless if it involves safety surrounding terrorist threats. The Federal Aviation Administration is pushing an initiative to improve air traffic control systems in the nation.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19751606-ADNFCR
