Flying magazine makes maintenance recommendations

Whether due to the weather or the suffering economy, many pilots are not flying as often as they used to, according to Flying Magazine.
Staying unused for long periods of time, can negatively affect an aircraft's parts and wind up increasing maintenance costs in the future. Also, aircraft inactivity can lead to engine rust and the need to replace seals in certain areas, such as shock struts and brakes. "One of the most important things an owner can do to cut maintenance costs is keep flying or pickle the engine if it's not flying," Phil Kirkham, a seasoned airframe and power-plant mechanic specializing in private-aircraft maintenance told the magazine.
To avoid some of these expenses, pilots should perform certain maintenance tasks as permitted by federal aviation rules. These preventative maintenance tasks include changing the oil and engine filter, changing landing-gear tires and greasing wheel bearings, among other activities.
In addition to taking care of their planes, pilots should always ensure that they have precautions set in place to take care of their families in the event of an accident. Life insurance for pilots is a way for them to make a potentially difficult time easier on their loved ones.
