GAMA: U.S.-EU aviation agreement will enhance safety

The General Aviation Manufacturing Association is hailing the achievement of the final step in the U.S.-EU aviation safety agreement, the company announced.
The agreement has been in the works for a number of years now, but will finally become official on May 1, 2011. According to the group, the agreement should streamline transatlantic cooperation on the regulations for manufacturing, certifying and maintaining aircraft, as well as guidelines for airworthiness.
GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce said, "It has been a long and sometimes challenging road toward implementation, but today is a very good day for the U.S. and European aviation industries." According to Bunce, "It would be difficult to overstate the importance of this agreement for the continued health and vitality of general aviation and for international aviation safety cooperation between the Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency."
Although more stringent international guidelines may improve the safety of aircraft across borders, aviation accidents will likely remain a major industry concern. Pilots may have a continued need to invest in pilot insurance as back-up assurance that their families will be provided for in their absence, should they perish in a plane crash.
