Aviation advancements in the cockpit are ensuring pilots' safety and streamlining their efficiency. A number of tools are helping pilots locate their planes in respect to incoming storms so they can better navigate them.
Garmin recently announced that it has released GTN software version 3.0. The new software is available for free as an update that gives users expanded features and capabilities for their GTN series avionics, providing a more efficient cockpit.
New features include a display support for weather radar, advanced ADS-B capability, connectivity across the globe, cross fill with the GNS 430W/530W series and georeferenced FliteChart. The latest update also incorporates the ability for a pilot to graphically edit direct-to legs, toggle off and on airspaces, sort airway exit points geographically, a Smart Airspace feature that offers bigger, bolder and relevant airspace and a TCAD traffic display.
The software update is available immediately for free to current GTN owners, although installation fees may be required. It has received approval for the Approved Model List Supplemental Type Certificate.
Other technological releases have relied on mobile devices to enable their use. At the end of December, Digital Aviation released the Radio Navigation Simulator Student edition Instrument Navigation Trainer for Pilots available on the iPhone, iPad or iPod.
No matter how efficient and safe tools are making a cockpit, pilots are still encouraged to obtain pilot life insurance to ensure their finances are secure.
