Hangar collapses at Norwood Airport

A Swift Aviation Services airport hangar collapsed at Norwood Airport in Massachusetts on Wednesday, leaving six airplanes and one helicopter damaged, according to AvWeb.
Though nobody was injured, one of the two employees occupying the hangar at the time of the collapse had to be rescued. Also, there was a wide range of damages, Avweb said. While some planes managed to escape barely touched, two others were completely totaled and the helicopter involved in the incident was described as "unrecognizable."
The collapse was reportedly caused by heavy snow accumulation on the roof of the hangar, which resulted in it caving in. The airport is located in Massachusetts, near Boston, which has received 49 inches of snowfall so far this year, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow is not only of concern for aircraft in hangars. Snowfall can cause low visibility, icing on planes, slippery runways and powerful crosswinds according to Salon.com's ask the pilot column. These types of hazards can result in fatal accidents, which can leave the families of those without pilot insurance with no source of financial stability. Life insurance for pilots is a necessity for them to ensure that their families are taken care of if they are ever involved in a crash.
