House subcommittee calls for rules about pilot fatigue

June 11, 2010, 05:17 pm

Members of a House subcommittee recently sent a letter to the Department of Transportation expressing their displeasure with the fact that new rules have not been proposed regarding pilot fatigue.

Four members of the House Subcommittee on Aviation - part of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure - signed the letter sent to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. That includes representatives James Oberstar, John Mica, Jerry Costello and Thomas Petri, all of whom said delays have continued since the Federal Aviation Administration said it would have rules by the end of last year.

The representatives said that although they understand studying pilot fatigue is a complicated process that may take some time, they also said a full review has not happened in more than 60 years.

"It is unacceptable that the DOT has not finished the process begun in 1995 to update the flight and duty regulations for airline pilots," the letter said.

Pilot fatigue has been the focus of a number of summits put on by the government, especially given its connection to flight safety.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19832882-ADNFCR
