A March 16 plane accident at the Long Beach Airport left five dead, including a member of the city's founding family and community leaders, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Beechcraft Kin Air private plane was transporting a group of six to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a ski trip, the source reported.
Shortly after takeoff, the plane turned around and circled back for the runway, where it crashed into the ground at around 10:37 a.m. According to the source, the reason the aircraft turned around remains unknown.
The plane crash killed five individuals, including Mark Bixby, member of Long Beach's prominent founding family and avid bicycling advocate. Prominent local real estate developers Tom Dean and Jeff Berger were also on the aircraft, the paper said. However, the names of the other two men, one of which was the plane's pilot, have not be released.
Mike Jensen, the only survivor of the accident, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
"These were charismatic men that believed in Long Beach, made a real contribution and worked towards a better community," Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster said in a statement.
Devastating plane crashes can occur unexpectedly and it is up to pilots to protect their families, should a fatality occur. Life insurance for pilots is essential coverage for pilots with loved ones who they want taken care of, after they're gone.
