NTSB investigating small plane crash in Utah

September 28, 2011, 05:35 pm

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a September 15 small plane crash that killed a pilot from Palominas, Arizona, and his dog, according to The Associated Press. The plane crash occurred in West Jordan, Utah, near Salt Lake City.

The AP notes that the pilot radioed an airport less than a mile from the scene of the crash, indicating that he was approaching to land. No bystanders were injured in the accident, which happened near a West Jordan elementary school, on a sidewalk just a few feet from a school administrative building, which was also undamaged.

NTSB investigators said that the aircraft went into a nose dive about 400 feet from the ground and crash landed in an upright position, but they have been unable to determine the cause of the crash as of yet.

A number of recent small plane crashes have brought attention to the need for good pilot safety practices. One high-profile crash at an air race in Nevada had many questioning the safety of air races and possible age limitations placed on pilots. Larger commercial airline pilots are also facing changes as safety administrations worldwide evaluate the need for more restrictions on the number of consecutive hours a pilot can fly.

Many pilots, whether independent or employed by an airline, take out pilot insurance policies, which are specifically tailored to cover the risks many pilots assume that do not affect the average citizen. These policies are often available at discounted group rates through aviator organizations.
