Oklahoma sees recent spike in airplane accidents

While airplane accidents are not common, a series of crashes in Oklahoma has some wondering what can be done to make the practice safer.
The Oklahoman newspaper cites data from the Federal Aviation Administration saying there where 23 accidents in the state last year. Oklahoma Aviation's director of operations, Show Kassam, told the paper there are some weather-related conditions that make flying in the state difficult.
"If you learn to fly here you're going to be proficient in landing in high winds," said Kassam. "You're also going to be dealing with a wide array of weather from severe thunderstorms to icing."
Learning how to properly handle an aircraft in all weather conditions is only part of the equation. Once a pilot has been properly trained, it is his or her responsibility to follow all safety precautions before heading down the tarmac.
It's advisable to ensure one has appropriate levels of life insurance for pilots as well as a properly maintained aircraft. While such measures don't guarantee safety, they can help increase the likelihood of a successful flight.
