Safety improvements are on their way for 15 Pennsylvania airports. Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell says that $1.9 million in funds will be used for the upgrades.
Some funding will go to Mid-Atlantic Soaring Center, for example, to repave the airport's runway. The Federal Aviation Administration says that there were over 50 million takeoffs and landings on the on the nation's runways last year.
Other improvements include fixing parking areas and improving fuel facilities. While there are a variety of reasons for airplane accidents, having up-to-date equipment can help prevent many of them.
The money, both on the federal and state level, comes from taxes. PennDot's aviation development program will contribute $1.7 million taken from the state's jet fuel tax and matching funds to the project. The remaining funds will come from the Federal Aviation Administration's block grant program.
"While we continue to seek ways to address the state's growing infrastructure funding challenges, it's essential for us to maintain our investment in all transportation modes, including aviation," said Rendell. "These funds will help keep our airports safe, support airport jobs and stimulate the businesses supplying materials and equipment for the enhancements."
