Registration for plane involved in Maine crash had lapsed

According to the Kennebec Journal, the registration for an aircraft that crashed into a house in Biddeford, Maine on Sunday, April 10 had it's registration lapse last month.
The source reports that the Cessna 402B's registration deadline was March 31, but the FAA database shows the registration was never completed. According to the Administration's records, the plane was manufactured in 1977 and is registered to a corporation in Nantucket.
The National Transportation Safety Board is still trying to gather clues to determine what may have caused the crash, but the FAA emphasizes that the fact that the aircraft was unregistered does not necessarily mean there was a problem with the plane. The Kennebec Journal says a medical examiner is scheduled to complete an autopsy of the pilot, who was found deceased under the combined wreckage of the aircraft and the house. Though he had made contact with air traffic controllers during the flight, he reportedly made no distress call.
Pilots sometimes don't realize problems until it is too late to alert those on the ground who may be able to help them evade a fatal accident. Seemingly routine flights can go wrong, and pilots may benefit from ensuring they have pilot life insurance coverage, whether they fly rarely or often.
