According to the Watertown Daily Times, a single engine Piper airplane was forced to make an emergency landing on a Watertown, Wisconsin, street near Watertown Municipal Airport.
The airplane, carrying the pilot and one passenger, suffered a catastrophic engine failure shortly after takeoff from Watertown Municipal Airport, and attempted to return to the runway there, but was forced onto a local road because of traffic on the runway. The source noted that the pilot had a relatively clear landing stretch along 12th Street, though he did rear end a car. No one was injured.
"As pilots, one of the things we always do is we train and we train and we train for emergency situations, however unlikely they are to happen,” Jeff Baum, the president of Wisconsin Aviation Inc., told the source. "But we never know how well our training is going to do, and we hope we never have to use it."
After the landing the plane was transported to the airport, where it awaits testing and analysis by Federal Aviation Administration officials who hope to determine the cause of the crash.
In preparing for such emergencies, many pilots take out pilot insurance policies. Life insurance for pilots often provides coverage for some particular instances that typical insurance may not cover.
