Teenager arrested in connection with aircraft laser pointing incident

A 14-year old boy has been arrested and charged with pointing a green laser at an aircraft at Los Angeles International Airport, the Associated Press reported.
The boy's arrest comes on the heels of a recent report by the Federal Aviation Administration stating that the number of aircraft experiencing laser incidents has drastically increased. According to that report, LAX had the highest number, with upwards of 100 reports of laser incidents by pilots.
Laser-pointing incidents such as this one are of major concern because of the potential to either temporarily blind or distract a pilot or cause permanent eye damage, presenting a serious threat to flight safety.
The boy was booked Tuesday evening for being suspected of pointing a green laser toward the pilot of a police helicopter, Los Angeles police sergeant Mike Richardson told the AP. He is currently being held in juvenile custody.
Laser pointing adds to the already numerous amount of hazards that pilots may encounter when they fly. Life insurance for pilots is the only way for them to ensure their families are provided for, should they be fatally injured in a serious plane crash.
