An aircraft fire and subsequent crash at the the Brownsville/South Padre Air Fiesta on March 12 resulted in the critical injury of a husband and wife aerobatic team, according to The Brownsville Herald.
Husband Kyle Franklin was piloting the Waco Mystery Ship, while wife Amanda Franklin was walking on the wing of the aircraft when the engine suddenly erupted in fire, the source says. Amanda was able to get back inside the plane and secure a seat before it began plummeting towards the ground.
Both were severely burned by flames in the cockpit of the plane and were airlifted to the critical care unit of a burn hospital in San Antonio.
Ironically, both Amanda and Kyle's fathers were killed by a midair collision at an airshow in Saskatchewan in 2005.
These types of tragic accidents caused by engine failure and other mechanical problems can occur at any time and are even more tragic when children are left behind to deal with the loss. Life insurance for pilots can help alleviate financial concerns for their families, which can make the grieving process even more difficult.
