The Senate Armed Services Committee recently found dozens of counterfeit parts in at least seven defense planes, most of the parts were purchased from Chinese manufacturers. The parts are believed to have infiltrated U.S. defense equipment from Raytheon Co, L-3 Communications Holdings and Boeing Co.
In an interview with Bloomberg, committee Chairman Carl Levin said the increasing number of counterfeit parts being discovered in airplanes is putting military men and women at risk and costing the U.S. government a fortune. Small plane pilots can protect themselves with life insurance in the event of an emergency, but if a U.S. military plane experiences problems the ramifications can be significant.
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said China's government is working with the United States to stop fake goods from being produced and sold to other countries.
The source reported the Pentagon's Defense Criminal Investigative Service is reviewing 40 cases involving counterfeit items, and the group is trying to find the source of the potentially defective parts and components that are threatening American lives.
NTDTV reported that the U.S. Armed Services Committee has called for Chinese authorities to shut down the counterfeit operations stemming from their country, and suggest the government investigate all Chinese electronic products imported into the United States before they leave the borders.
