Airline travel said to be on the upswing

Professional pilots who are interested in finding a new or different job may find that their services are more in demand in the coming months, due largely to an improving economy. Throughout the recession, airlines were forced to reduce staff levels and to cut other expenses in order to remain afloat at a time when many tourists and business travelers were cutting corners or simply staying home. As the economic recovery has progressed, the industry has largely seen an upswing in new business activity. This was confirmed by various media reports in recent days. For example, Dow Jones Newswires quoted Gerard Arpey, chairman of American Airlines' parent company AMR Corp. as saying that some corporations are "beginning to allow their employees to travel in the premium cabins." This would be significant because airlines derive a substantial part of their revenues from high-end business travelers. However, Dow Jones also quoted Laura Wright, treasurer of Southwest Airlines, as saying that business travel "is still nowhere close to fully recovered." Elsewhere, a report from Bloomberg News cited similar progress being made in the airline industry, quoting Jeff Smisek, CEO of Continental Airlines, as saying that "the recovery is on."
