Airspace management to be discussed in NextGen
March 8, 2011, 07:43 pm
Federal Aviation Administration and National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials involved in planning for the NextGen air traffic control system have announced that they are seeking input on how to reorganize airspace to accommodate the increasing amount of aircraft in flight, according to AVweb.
Researchers from Honeywell have put together a survey on airplane spacing to gather information from people working in interval management on how they should reorganize airspace effectively.
"It's crucial to obtain input on this topic from pilots, air traffic controllers [and] managers, and dispatch operators," said Honeywell researcher Dr. Jeff Lancaster.
The reorganization is also necessary because, as the number of aircraft increase, the odds of mid-air collisions and crashes during landing and takeoff may also increase if plans are not implemented to improve aircraft movement management. As the skies become more dangerous to navigate, pilots should ensure that they are equipped with pilot insurance, to provide for their families in the event that they are fatally injured in a plane accident.
