ASTM International aims to improve general aviation safety

ASTM International recently announced the formation of Committee F44 on General Aviation. The new committee will help alter the way in which smaller aircraft are manufactured and certified to improve safety.
“Simplified, higher-level rules recommended by the ARC combined with the use of ASTM performance standards that specify the methods of aircraft compliance will bring much-needed common sense and flexibility to the regulatory structure,” said Greg Bowles, director of engineering at the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and co-chair of the ARC. “For years, the high cost of certification has driven up the price of new aircraft and made it prohibitive for manufacturers to bring innovation forward."
Bowles added that by addressing the efficiency of the entire manufacturing and certification process, they can aim to significantly improve safety and create a "healthier environment" for the aviation industry.
Although general aviation was named to National Transportation Safety Board's 2013 Top Ten Most Wanted List of Safety Improvements, the industry is always looking to improve safey. Earlier this year, Sporty's updated its Flying Aspen Evolution program by adding Evolution Synthetic Vision displayed on the PFD and MFD. This will help thousands of general aviation pilots navigate terrain and improve safety.
Pilots are always encouraged, no matter how safe the conditions, to obtain pilot life insurance.
