Savannah Technical College in Georgia recently broke ground on a new Aviation Training Center that will be used to prepare high-level technicians for jobs in the industry, specifically in aircraft maintenance and assembly. The school aims to have the center open by spring 2013.
“The Technical College System of Georgia is committed to ensuring that the state’s aviation industries, including corporate leaders like Gulfstream, have access to a steady pipeline of highly trained technicians with the specialized skills that are required in the fields of aircraft assembly and maintenance,” said Ron Jackson, Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner.
According to the Savannah Morning News, the facility will be 29,152 square feet with a 5,000-square-foot hangar, laboratories and classrooms. The facility will be used as part of the Aircraft Technology Department, which prepares students for careers in aircraft maintenance and repair, luxury craft cabinet-making, and electrical repair and installation, the source reported.
Kathy Love, president of Savannah Technical College, told NBC affiliate WSAV that the training center will play a vital role in the local economy by providing job training for area professionals.
"It's our time now, particularly with this Gulfstream expansion that we can provide the workforce that they need," Love said.
