The Aviation Heritage Park will host its annual Hangar Party at the Bowling Green Warren County Regional Airport in Kentucky on June 9.
The event will feature aircraft of various types, from military planes to homemade experimental craft. The display will educate the public and honor the Tuskegee Airmen, who, in World War II, were the first African-American military aviators to serve in the U.S. military. The featured plane of the event is the rare P-51C Mustang, painted with a bright red tail, flown by the Tuskegee Airmen during the war.
“We are honored to welcome the Commemorative Air Force’s Red Tail P-51 to our hangar party,” said AHP President Arnie Franklin. “Each year, we bring a unique aviation artifact to Bowling Green. This one flies.”
The event also will debut the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s rise above traveling exhibit. The 53-foot trailer has a curved movie screen, seating for up to 30 people and climate control. The attraction educates viewers on the many trials the Tuskegee Airmen had to overcome during World War II, and it even shows footage of the Mustang flying.
An event at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama also celebrates aviation heroes. The 31st annual Gathering of Eagles will welcome a former Tuskegee Airman, one of the five living survivors of the Doolittle Raid and the Berlin "Candy Bomber."
