Blue Angels return to Pensacola

March 26, 2012, 09:17 am

The Blue Angels recently announced they will be returning to Pensacola, Florida, where it will start practicing by the end of March. Viewing of the practices is free to the public, and autograph sessions will follow Wednesday practices inside the National Navy Aviation Museum.

In addition, the Blue Angels have recently deployed a mobile application that allows aviation enthusiasts and other pilots to follow Blue Angel activity, while supporting the museum.

Another way to support the pilot industry is by purchasing pilot insurance to keep the skies safe.

Each year the Blue Angels attract 15 million spectators to their air shows. The highest maneuver performed in the air show is the vertical rolls played out by the Opposing Solo, which reaches up to 15,000 feet off the ground. The lowest maneuver performed at the Blue Angels air show is the Sneak Pass conducted by the Lead Solo, which occurs just 50 feet in the air.

During the show, pilots can reach up to 700 mph, or cruise through some maneuvers at 120 mph. The F/A- 18 Hornet can reach speeds almost twice the speed of sound at about 1,400 mph, weighing 24,500 pounds without aircrew.
