Busy travel dates just weeks away

Thanksgiving has long been hailed as one of the busiest travel times of the year. From college students on their first break of the semester to families flying across the country for the holiday, there are a number of reasons why people rush to the skies in November. Even though the economy isn't what it once was, the Air Transport Association of America is predicting an increase in air passengers this year. In fact, ATA estimates there will be a 3.5 percent uptick in travel from last Thanksgiving. The increased ridership may help the industry recover, as more people will be willing to shell out more money to be near loved ones for the holiday. ATA president and CEO James May says the projected travel numbers provide a sign that things are beginning to turn around. "It is reassuring to see travel levels rebounding, with the stronger economy," says May. "While modest, the recovery is particularly encouraging given the deep hole that this industry was in a year ago." Not only do more passengers travel during the end of November, but they go further too. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics says that the number of long-distance trips increases more than 50 percent around Thanksgiving.
