Cause of recent Oregon crash still unknown

June 1, 2011, 03:03 pm

The Federal Aviation Administration is still unclear on what caused a small plane to crash on Saturday heading from Oregon to California, according to the Associated Press. The plane had been missing since Saturday afternoon and officials discovered the wreckage in Nevada on Tuesday night.

The location of the crash was roughly 25 miles from Reno, the AP reports. Two men and one woman were discovered dead in the plane. It was unclear at the time of the discovery if any of the passengers had pilots life insurance.

The victims were flying in a Cessna 172 and it is being reported that they crashed in the Peterson Mountain range at roughly 6,500 feet. Authorities began searching for the flight after a family member reported that it had not arrived.

The flight left Roseburg, Oregon, around 3 p.m. on Saturday, and was set to arrive in Susanville, California, around an hour later. The towns are only 315 miles away from one another.
