According to figures from the Federal Aviation Administration, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is still the second busiest airport in the United States, following Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson. However, the Atlanta airport, while still reporting the most arrivals and departures in the nation, experienced a 2.7 percent decline in 2011 compared with 2010. The remaining top five airports in the United States are Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Denver International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
O'Hare International also showed a 0.4 percent decline in 2011, to about 879,000 takeoffs and landings. Worldwide, O'Hare International is the third busiest by passenger numbers, behind Atlanta and Beijing. But O'Hare might move to a higher spot in the future, as the airport is planning a $15 billion expansion, The Associated Press reported.
In addition, Chicago's Midway Airport is ranked No. 27 in the nation, handling 255,227 flights and 17.6 million passengers in 2011. Midway reported a 7 percent increase in boarding passengers in 2011 compared with 2010. Chicago aviation experts believe traffic at O'Hare is more manageable with Midway Airport nearby, allowing travelers to have more options. O'Hare's busiest year to date was 2004, when it handled a record 992,471 flights, the Chicago Tribune reported.
