The continued interest and innovation that is transforming the way cars are built may be applicable to aircraft as well. That is why the Automotive X Prize competition vehicle winner will be on display at the Aviation Unleashed conference.
The car, Edison2, was crafted out of ultra-light materials to help make the vehicle more efficient. The car maker says the vehicle is equipped with brakes that weigh a few ounces, rather than the typical pound.
In addition to material use, the aviation industry has been highlighted as a source of large volumes of pollution by environmentalists.
NASA Aeronautics Research Directorate deputy director David Hinton says that a lot can be learned by taking the technology employed in making a light car and applying it to enhancing aircraft.
"Some of the technologies that have made the Very Light Car possible could be used in airplanes," says Hinton. "So we thought Edison2's knowledge and experience would interest an audience that's focusing on what's possible in aviation."
In addition to the Edison2, panel discussions and other demonstrations will take place at Aviation Unleashed.
