Over the past six years, Enterprise State Community College in Alabama has seen a significant uptick in enrollment in its aviation programs, as more students are interested in training for good-paying jobs in a growing industry.
The Dothan Eagle reported enrollment in ESCC's aviation programs has increased 374 percent since 2005, and the college now teaches 1,300 students flying techniques at five locations across Alabama.
Deidre Frith, director of marketing and media relations for the school, told the source the growth in enrollment can be attributed to advancements in the aviation industry and high wages reported by pilots. New hires in the industry could make $40,000 to $50,000 a year.
Similarly, students at the National Center for Aviation Training in Kansas are also taking courses to prepare for careers in the aviation industry. Wichita news source KWCH reported the aviation industry is booming, and aviation education programs are working just to keep up with demand.
In 2011, NCAT reported record enrollment, and the school is already on track for an 8 percent increase in students for the spring semester, the source said. Many topics are discussed at the school including maintenance, safety and pilot insurance.
