FAA reminds travelers to leave fireworks at home

With Independence Day right around the corner, the Federal Aviation Administration is reminding people that they can face serious legal and safety consequences by bringing fireworks on board airplanes.
According to the FAA, even smaller firework products such as sparklers are banned from aircraft because of the "tremendous" fire risk they can pose both in the air and on the ground. Such items cannot be placed in checked or carry-on baggage, nor can they be carried on one's person.
People who do violate federal aviation regulations in regard to hazardous materials can face civil penalties of up to $50,000, or even double that amount if death, serious illness or injury occurs because of their actions.
In the most serious cases, passengers can even face prison terms.
A look at the FAA website provides more information about the dangerous items that may and may not be permitted on a plane. For example, items like lighter fluid and strike anywhere matches are forbidden in both carry-on items. Passengers are also barred from carrying firearms and ammunition on board an aircraft, although there are provisions for checking and transporting unloaded firearms.
