The recent death of the famed airshow performer Greg Poe highlights the importance of life insurance for pilots. Poe was 57 years old when he died of a heart attack on Sunday, leaving his brothers, Russ and Rick, daughter Kelsey and girlfriend Terri behind.
The Boise, Idaho native had been consistently performing in professional airshows for more than 20 years before his death, and he is widely considered to be one of the best aerobatic performers of his time. Over the span of his career, he logged more than 10,000 flight hours in well over 100 different types of aircraft.
After he lost his son, Ryan, in 2002 to drug addiction, Greg started the Ryan J. Poe Foundation. He also began Poe's Elevate Your Life Program, which saw him visit middle school and high school students around the country, speaking publically about following your dreams and not letting life get in the way.
According to the Idaho Press-Tribune, Poe said in a recent interview that he "wants to be remembered as a pilot, an entertainer and someone who gives back to the community."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. In 2006 alone, more than 630,000 people lost their lives to heart disease.
