A gun was discovered in a traveler’s carry-on luggage at Tri-Cities Regional Airport security check-in. The alleged offender reportedly left the firearm in the luggage on accident at the Tennessee airport.
The pistol was a .380 Ruger, and there were five bullets in a clip in a separate location in the traveler's bag. A Transportation Security Administration agent found it around 6:30 a.m. and confiscated the gun and clip, according to an official statement release.
“From what I understand, the person was pulled aside, investigated and all background checked,” said Melissa Thomas, the airport’s marketing director. “It was determined he was not a threat, there was no [bad intent] there, the person was allowed to continue on their journey.”
This is the first firearm to be discovered at the Tri-Cities Airport this year. There were more than 1,300 firearms found by the TSA at security checkpoints during 2011.
Firearms, ammunition and firearm parts are permitted in checked luggage but are prohibited in carry-on baggage. In order to check the firearm, the passenger must declare it and it must be in a properly locked container. Violations of the TSA requirements can rack up penalties of up to $10,000 per violation.
Those pilots flying often should consider pilot life insurance in the unlikely event of an emergency.
