It was a summer day and most schools were empty, but that didn't stop roughly 200 people from gathering at Aviation High School in Des Moines, Washington this month, including U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Democratic Senator Patty Murray.
The two government officials praised the school, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. Aviation High students have a 98 percent success rate on the 10th grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning exam, reports the Seattle Times.
Aviation High principal and CEO Reba Gillman designed the school to have students work on real life scenarios.
"We want to prepare our students to fill critical jobs in STEM fields throughout the nation," Gillman said according to the Highline Times. "We believe that the students who attend Aviation High will help our nation remain competitive in an increasingly technology-driven world where the U.S. is not producing technically-trained workers at the same rate as other nations."
Aviation High School is the first aviation-themed high school in Washington state, preparing students who wish to enter the industry in some context.
