Idaho bill proposes specialty license plate

A recent Idaho bill may create a specialty license plate that honors pilots both by showcasing their hobby and by providing funds to improve local aviation, according to the Associated Press.
The "Fly Idaho" license plate would benefit general aviation, because the proceeds would go to updating the airstrips at recreational airports in the Idaho backcountry. They would also work on developing new airstrips, providing more landing options for local GA pilots.
The development of new landing places is essential, as the backcountry is largely only accessible by hiking or horseback riding, which makes it impossible for some disabled people to experience the wilderness, Idaho Republican Joe Palmer said.
The plates will cost $35, $22 of which would go to the Idaho Aviation Foundation. In addition, renewing the plates would cost $25, $12 of which would be forwarded to the foundation for aviation improvement efforts.
Palmer also mentioned in his proposal that the funding will also help improve backcountry safety measures. Safety is a constant concern for pilots, who encounter numerous hazards while in flight. Even with improved runways, Idaho pilots should make the extra effort to ensure their families are provided for in the event of a fatal accident, by considering pilot insurance.
