Insurance protects against flips and crashes

December 6, 2011, 05:27 pm

A small plane recently crashed near the airport in Cortland, Alabama. Local authorities have identified the pilot of the crash as 41-year-old Steven Haase of Dothan, who was reportedly test flying the plane before possibly buying it.

Haase was treated at Huntsville Hospital for minor injuries and has been released, CBS affiliate WDEF reported. While the injuries were minor, pilot insurance could still be used to cover medical expenses as well as damage to the plane.

In addtion, a small plane recently flipped over on the runway, leaving the pilot and student upside down until rescue crews could arrive. The Province reported the Cessna 172 was taking off when a blast of air from the engine of a passing jet flipped the small plane over. Because wind turbulence appeared to cause the odd crash, the Transportation Safety Board will likely not investigate the incident.

While the pilot and student did not sustain any injuries, the event highlights how external factors can lead to accidents that can wrack up repair bills and medical expenses. Pilot insurance can help safeguard pilots from these bills.
