LaHood looks to new committee's first meeting to examine aviation issues

During the first meeting of a new U.S. Department of Transportation aviation committee, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called on its members to aid in efforts to make sure the industry remains strong.
The creation of the Future of Aviation Advisory Committee was rooted in a form lead by LaHood last November regarding the industry. The committee held its first meeting on May 25, having been officially established in April.
LaHood said that the people who gathered for the committee's first meeting represent an interest that is concerned with the future of the aviation industry and will examine old problems with new approaches.
"I have high hopes and high expectations for what this committee of diverse experts can accomplish on behalf of the aviation industry, its workforce and consumers," LaHood said.
The committee will examine issues such as safety in the industry, along with how itis funded and its ability to stay competitive. Along with manufacturers, academics and airline representatives, members of the general aviation industry hold positions on body. It is headed by Susan Kurland, the assistant secretary for aviation and international affairs at the Transportation Department.
