Long Beach Airport has second lowest average airfares in the nation

May 23, 2012, 12:44 pm

The Long Beach Airport is ranked No. 2 in the nation overall, behind Atlantic City, but for the third straight quarter, the it has had the lowest average airfares in California.

The U.S. Department of Transportation quarterly report has the average round-trip flight for the airport at $229 for the final quarter of 2011, while the national average was $368 during that time.

“Our primary focus is customer service, and keeping costs low is a part of that,” said airport Director Mario Rodriguez.

The airport, like Las Vegas, is able to have lower airfare because nearby casinos subsidize the flights in order to get business in the area. In 2011, 3.1 million travelers went through the Long Beach Airport.

A report from the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed Cincinnati was home to the most expensive airport, with an average cost per flight of $502 and Houston's George Bush International came in second at $494. The Delta hub out of Cincinnati said the company plans to increase flight costs in hopes of turning a profit with the ever-increasing price of jet fuel, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

For pilots meeting the demand at these airports, pilot life insurance can offer peace of mind while flying during the busy air travel season.
