Although the number of Maine residents who are private pilots has dropped to 1,078 today from more than 1,500 10 years ago and the number of nationwide private pilot licenses is just more than 200,000 compared to more than 250,000 in 2003, many pilots still believe Maine is a place for aviation enthusiasts to fly.
"It's something we work on every day," said Brittney Miculka, the manager of prospective pilot and youth outreach for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, about the drop in numbers in a phone interview with Kennebec Journal. "A lot of youth don't look toward aviation, either as a career or a hobby. For us, retention is just as important as recruitment."
Flying is life for Lisa Reece, the president of the Maine Aeronautics Association, and her husband, Steve Williams, an avid pilot who introduced Lisa to flying. Both are well-known throughout Maine’s flying communiy
Maine hosts a number of events to encourage aviation throughout the state. The Annual Fryeburg Airport Open House Eastern Slope Regional Airport is on July 8. Pilots taking small planes to the event should look into pilot life insurance before takeoff.
