OK governor opposes general aviation user fee

Many Oklahoma business leaders, politicians and now the governor are in opposition to a proposed user fee on general aviation aircrafts.
Governor Mary Fallin recently wrote a letter to President Barack Obama discussing how she believes the fee would harm important sectors of the state's economy, as well as one of the few manufacturing sectors that are helping the U.S. economy recover. The proposed fee would add a $100 charge per flight instead of taxing aviation fuel, the Wichita Business Journal reported.
The White House responded to a petition of more than 9,000 people opposed to the fee by saying that the charge is a fair way to continue to fund air traffic services. The fee is estimated to generate $11 billion over the next 10 years. However, Fallin and many in the aviation industry believe the tax would put valuable jobs at risk, News OK reported.
In agreement with Fallin and her colleagues, New Hampshire Governor John Lynch also opposes the fee. Lynch is working with Fallin and a growing number of aviation professionals who believe the tax will do more harm than good to local economies and the aviation industry in the United States, the source reported.
