Passage of liability bill in Kansas may open more airstrips for GA access

A liability protection bill, recently passed by the Kansas House of Representatives with a vote of 118 to three, may increase access to private airstrips in the state for general aviation access, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
The House Bill 2184, which already protects landowners against being held liable for incidents which occur involving hunting, fishing and camping on their property, would be expanded to include non-commercial aviation activity, the source says.
"There are ... numerous ... private airstrips throughout the state that are not currently open to the public because of outdated and inequitable liability laws," said AOPA Southwest regional representative Shelly deZevallos. "AOPA has been working across the country to change liability laws so that owners of these airstrips can open them to GA access."
Though increased access makes flying in certain areas more convenient for pilots, dealing with unfamiliar landing areas could potentially be difficult and may lead to an increase in the number of aviation accidents. Having life insurance for pilots may be essential for providing for family members following a pilot's death.
